The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has taken decisive action to address environmental nuisances by dislodging traders engaged in roadside trading activities around Oyingbo Market.
As a result of various environmental infractions, the market has been temporarily sealed.
The decision to seal Oyingbo Market was prompted by multiple environmental infractions observed in the area.
The Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stated that despite the initial closure of the market, certain traders continued to engage in roadside trading activities, contravening environmental regulations.
Gbadegesin stated that the actions of LAWMA underscore the commitment of the Lagos government to environmental compliance and the maintenance of cleanliness and orderliness within the state.
He said roadside trading activities can contribute to environmental degradation and pose health and safety risks to traders and the general public.
His words:
”The move to dislodge traders from the roadside and seal the market aligns with broader efforts to address environmental challenges in Lagos.
”These efforts include waste management initiatives, urban planning, and regulations to ensure a clean and sustainable environment.”
He called on traders and the public to cooperate with the authorities in maintaining a clean and orderly environment.
”Compliance with environmental regulations is vital for the well-being and health of the community as a whole.
”As the market remains temporarily closed to resolve environmental issues, the Lagos state government and LAWMA will continue to work towards achieving sustainable and responsible environmental practices across the city,” he added.
