The Kano gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in the 2023 general elections, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, has declared that he would no longer attend social functions outside the state.
Yakasai made the declaration on social media following an increment in the price of fuel.
Nigerians woke up on Tuesday, July 18, to see that the fuel pump price increased from N537/litre to N617/litre at some filling stations operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL in Abuja on Tuesday.
The NNPCL attributed the rise in the petroleum pump prices in the country to ‘market forces’.
The situation has sparked outrage nationwide, with many saying they can’t cope with the recent price.
Others have started cutting costs to be able to manage the situation, and Yakasai, former media aide to ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, seems to fall into that category.
He said due to the recent increment in the fuel price, he would stay away from weddings held outside Kano, even if he is invited.
He wrote:
“Public announcement: Please, nobody should invite me to any event outside of Kano unless he or she is funding it.
“All those wedding invitations from Kaduna to Gombe, I’m not doing again. Travelling is now a luxury that we can’t afford.”
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate review of the proposed N8,000 conditional cash transfer to Nigerians, meant to cushion the effect of the petrol subsidy removal.
“This is in deference to the views expressed by Nigerians against it,” Dele Alake, presidential spokesman, said in a terse statement.
