At the start of the season, Wilfred “Ndidi” looked as though his time at Leicester City was drawing to a close. However, the Nigerian international player has since found a way to revive his career and has now become one of the key players at Leicester City.
The 21-year-old player has been chosen for the best Player of the award for the month of September. Ndidi has been involved in seven goals in 14 games so far this season, only Kiernan “Dewsbury-Hall” Hall (eight) has been more involved in more goals.
Last Saturday, Ndidi was on the field for 13 minutes and injury time as Leicester beat Stoke City 2-0. According to Leicester Mercury, Ndidi had more shots than any other player on the pitch and all three of his shots were a few inches away from the goal, one was also blocked closing the goal-line, one deflected over the net and the last went just wide.
Ndidi scored his fourth goal of the season, setting Jamie Vardy up for his third goal in three games, and he also won Leicester’s penalty that secured victory over Bristol City.
Under normal situations, this would not have been a problem for Ndidi, who has made fame for himself on the opposite side of the field. But after his injury at the end of the previous season, he has been performing so well.
Most players had a dip in form in the two seasons before City’s Premier League relegation, but Ndidi has been the worst of them.
He has made just 27 appearances this season, 19 of which have been starts and eight of which have been subs, and he has failed to score or provide an assist. His tackle and interception rate has dropped dramatically.
The 2021/22 season was even worse, with Ndidi contributing only three goals (2 goals and 1 assist) in 31 games across all competitions for the Super Eagles.
The best Ndidi had a goal-to-assists ratio since joining Leicester in 2017/18 was in both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons, with a goal and 4 assists in each.
The Lagos-born player’s outstanding season was in 2016/17 when he scored about 6 goals with 1 assist in 57 games.
