The Nigerian football fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the death of ex-Super Falcons gaolkeeper Bidemi Aluko-Olaseni, who died after an eight-year battle with cancer.
The demise of the goalkeeper, whose tenure as a goalkeeper for the Super Falcons was marked by exceptional skill and played for local teams like Rivers Angels and Sunshine Queens, was officially confirmed by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
In a message shared via its official X handle on Saturday, the NFF expressed sorrow over the death of Bidemi, whose contributions to Nigerian football, both on and off the field, will be remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Super Falcons goalkeeper, Bidemi Aluko-Olaseni after an eight-year struggle with cancer. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family. May her soul rest in eternal peace.” The NFF announced on its X handle.
Aluko’s struggle with cancer started in April 2017 when she was first diagnosed, but following treatment and a mastectomy, she was given the all-clear one year later.
She did, however, receive a second diagnosis of the illness in January 2019 and had ten rounds of chemotherapy before the coronavirus pandemic.
