Onome Ebi, captain of the Super Falcons, has declared that “no one can force her out of the game” and that she will retire at the right moment. There have been calls for her to retire from professional football, with reports circulating that she is ready to leave the sport.
Ebi, who is 40 years old, has recently signed a free-agent contract with the Nigeria Women’s Football League (Naija Ratel).
She was also a member of the Super Falcons squad that participated in this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup (Australia and New Zealand). It was her sixth World Cup appearance, having made her debut back in 2003.
Ebi stated on Brila FM that when she is ready to retire, she will make that decision on her own. “No one can force me to retire or make me quit,” she said. “I love the game and I enjoy playing it, so when I am satisfied that I am no longer able to play, I will retire.
No one can make me quit when I am not ready.”
Ebi won four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles (2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018) and was part of the 2008 Beijing Olympics squad with the Super Falcons.
