Rivers State House of Assembly hallowed chambers have been set on fire by suspected political thugs.
The attack comes after the House of Assembly on Monday voted to impeach its leader, Hon. Edison Ehie, and the state governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.
The incident happened at around 9:45 p.m., causing a state of tension in the assembly complex, which is located beside the State Police Command.
News.ng gathered that the House of Assembly had decided to impeach Ehie and the governor at its resumed sitting on Monday due to undisclosed reasons.
It has since been reported that some youths stormed the assembly complex and set it on fire.
A senior police official in the state who did not wish to be named confirmed the attack, adding that the fire was put out by the combined efforts of police and state Fire Service teams.
According to the source, the Rivers State House of Assembly’s main chamber was attacked and set on fire, which was put out by police and the state fire service team.
However, presently Security has taken control of the assembly complex, with more than 17 security trucks and 4 APCs deployed at the facility. More than 50 Federal Security personnel were also deployed at the complex.
It was also reported that the Rivers government house camp Commander had received a sack letter.
