Popular singer David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, revealed in an interview on the ‘Kelly Clarkson Show’ that his father was against him starting a music career and cancelled many of his performances.
The multiple-award-winning singer said he was the first of his family to become a popular artist in Nigeria’s music industry. “I’m from a family that values education,” he said. “My dad was really against me starting a music career because I didn’t make it. He didn’t mind me doing it, but he wanted me to finish school.”
He owned a University, so you can imagine how scared he was. My mom was also a college professor, so they were also worried. You want your children to succeed, but in our music industry, it’s not that simple.
So, we agreed that I would go to school two weeks a month, and then I could work in the studio during those two weeks. As my music grew, I had to do some part-time classes. Eventually, I got too big for him, so he got angry.
He saw a billboard of my show, which was cancelled before I got there. He had that kind of power. It got to the point that everyone was afraid to book me, but eventually, I finished school, and now he’s my biggest supporter.
