To comply with new European legislation intended to limit the market dominance of Big Tech through a variety of requirements and limits, TikTok is debuting a data portability API.
The short-video-sharing app and social network platform disclosed this development in a release seen by News.ng on Tuesday.
ByteDance, TikTok’s parent, had earlier requested an interim measure to give TikTok additional time to execute the requirements. However, the EU General Court refused the motion, stating that ByteDance “failed to demonstrate the urgency” required.
Recall that six digital giants were given “gatekeeper” status by the European Union (EU) in September of last year as TikTok was put in the regulatory firing line along with Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft.
“We have always been clear that it is our duty to comply with relevant obligations under the DMA until legal questions on our designation appeal are resolved.
We have since taken a number of steps to comply with the DMA ahead of 6 March,” the statement reads in part.
Furthermore, TikTok announced that it has updated its primary “download your data” function, enabling users to select the categories of data they want to save (such as posts or direct messages).
This update will initially be released in the EEA, but it will eventually be made available everywhere according to the release.
For the time being, TikTok/Bytedance must abide by the DMA requirements that take effect on March 6 as it continues to protest the decision to grant it gatekeeper status, claiming that it is genuinely a competitor.
