A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Jibrin Samuel Okutepa, has criticised the Bola Tinubu-led government for its plan to share N8,000 to 12 million Nigerians.
Okutepa said the proposed move indicates that the interest of the masses means nothing to the government.
According to him, there are better ways to help citizens who need help than the proposed policy by the Tinubu-led administration.
He wrote:
”Nigeria, as a country, is full of absurdities. Government is to share N500 billion to 12 million unknown households. Then N19 billion for agriculture to provide food for over 200 million people.
”N70 billion is to be used by the new members of the National Assembly. The government thinks we are all stupid.
”I tried to understand the Nigerian government, but I am unable to understand their wisdom. The judiciary dispensing justice is said to have been allocated N35 billion. Not too long ago, a building collapsed on a chief judge of a state. Nigerians that need help are not being helped.”
Okutepa lamented that those in authority have neglected the masses and focused on looting the treasury for personal gains.
He said the downtrodden are not enjoying the vast resources in the country because those in power have cornered it for themselves.
His words:
”No refinery functions in Nigeria. Public transport is in shambles. The interest of the masses means nothing to our government. I have not been able to understand government magic in Nigeria. The essence of government is to protect and provide for the welfare of the people.
”But in Nigeria, it appears that government is the best avenue for those in power to better their lots and the lots of their cronies while the poor and the downtrodden are neglected and made to bear the brunt of misguided governance. Yet Nigerians have no say. Government magic, I must say.
”I want to know when Nigerians will enjoy the benefits of the national resources. Nigerians in the midst of plenty but have nothing to enjoy other than pains and sorrow. Only a few closely connected to power enjoy what the vast majority of the people ought to enjoy. Nigerians think well.”
The plan by the Tinubu-led government continues to generate negative reactions among Nigerians.
Many say handing cash to low-income people is not the best way to fight poverty or provide palliatives for citizens.
