Dr Olisa Agbakoba, a former Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) chairman, has condemned the recent comment of Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa at the valedictory session of the 9th Senate.
Bulkachuwa, the immediate past senator representing Bauchi north senatorial district, had said he influenced his Appeal Court justice wife to help colleagues who had issues with their elections.
Zainab Bulkachuwa, a former President of the Nigerian Court of Appeal, is the wife of the 83-year-old politician.
She bowed out as the appellate court president in March 2020 after clocking the statutory mandatory age of 70.
“I want to thank everyone for their support, particularly my wife, whose freedom and independence I encroached upon when she was in office.
“She has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended her help to my colleagues,” Bulkachuwa said before he was stopped by Ahmad Lawan, ex-Senate President.
Agbakoba, a democracy and the rule of law scholar, said Senator Bulkachuwa deserves to be apprehended immediately by the authorities.
His words:
“It is a blight on my confidence in our systems. I represented Usman Tuggar in relation to disputed elections between him and Senator Bulkachuwa for Bauchi North senatorial.
“We lost in 3 courts. Senator Bulkachuwa seems to suggest why President Bola Tinubu must cleanse the system in a most dramatic and fundamental process if he wishes to succeed.
“The president ought to act now!!!”
