The Spanish head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso, has disclosed that lethal Nigerian international striker Victor Boniface will be on the bench when his team takes on Fortuna Düsseldorf in a Bundesliga game scheduled for next Wednesday.
Alonso, who disclosed in a press conference on Friday, said that Saturday’s game against Hoffenheim will come too early for Boniface, but he will be back in the squad for Wednesday’s DFB Pokal semi-final clash against Fortuna Dusseldorf.
“For Victor Boniface, we’ll wait a little longer. The idea is that he will be back in the squad on Wednesday. Exequiel Palacios and Arthur won’t be there tomorrow either,” Alonso said.

Leverkusen have also celebrated the return of their top scorer to full fitness, as the Nigerian international was pictured in training with his teammates on Monday.
The club, which sits atop the German Bundesliga, is glad to have him back at this crucial juncture, as they have important matches in both the domestic Cup and the Europa League.
Recall that Boniface sustained a groin injury during the Super Eagles’ training camp before the 2023 AFCON. His return also bodes well for the senior national team, which will play South Africa in June to continue their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
