Dr Jerry Ugokwe becomes first Professor of Legislative Studies in Nigeria

Dr Jerry Sonny Ugokwe has emerged as Nigeria’s first Professor of Legislative Studies.

Dr Ugokwe, from Anambra state, is a two-time member of the House of Representatives and later served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Austria and Slovakia.

He was also appointed as Nigeria’s Permanent Resident Representative to United Nations Offices in Vienna, including the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) by President Yar’Adua in recognition of his dedication to the service to humanity.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, under the leadership of Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone, the Vice Chancellor, approved the appointment of Ugokwe as a Professor of Governance and Legislative Studies in its Awka Business School on Wednesday, June 7.

The appointment was in a letter to Dr Ugokwe from the institution’s Registrar, Barr. Philomena Iwara Okoye.

Dr Ugokwe was recently conferred with a National Honours Award by the Federal Government of Nigeria for his contributions to national development.

He is reputed for training legislators in State Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly in Governance and Legislative Matters.

He is also a Governance and Legislative Studies consultant to several international and local organisations.

Prof. Ugokwe is also a Lecturer in Governance and Legislative Studies at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, an agency of the National Assembly affiliated with the University of Benin.
