Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the Super Eagles, is delighted that the team’s five-year losing streak in friendlies has come to an end.
“I am glad that after 15 matches we have won a game,” said Peseiro after the match. “We have had 8 defeats and 7 draws in the last 5 years, but today was a good result.”
The 3-time African champions beat Mozambique, 3-2, on Monday night at Estadio Municipal De Albufeira. Mozambique opened the scoring but the Super Eagles fought back to win the match.
Does the future have anything for the Super Eagles?
In the past five years, the Nigerian national football team has not managed to win a friendly match, with a total of eight losses and seven draws. However, the result of today’s match is a positive one.
Next up for Peseiro’s squad is the 2026 World Cup qualification games against Lesotho in November, followed by the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast in January 2024.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group A of the tournament, which will see them compete against Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and Ivory Coast. The Super Eagles will be planning towards a fourth consecutive AFCON winner, having won it previously in 2013.
