Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has called for collaborative efforts from various stakeholders to address the prevailing challenge of sabotage and pipeline vandalism within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
Speaking at the 2023 International Pipeline Technology and Security Conference, the Speaker, who was represented by Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Upstream, affirmed the National Assembly’s unwavering commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at reforming the country’s oil and gas sector.
Highlighting the sector’s significance as the economic backbone of Nigeria, he stressed the vital importance of collective action to combat issues such as vandalism and sabotage that adversely impact the industry.
He conveyed the Green Chambers’ dedication and determination to actively contribute to the ongoing efforts directed at fortifying and revamping the oil and gas sector for the nation’s economic prosperity.
He further stated that the collaboration stands as a crucial step toward addressing the challenges that have hindered the full potential of the industry.
In 2022, the cases of oil spillage by reported causes totalled 572, out of which 480 were due to oil theft and sabotage and 92 by operational issues, according to Dataphyte, a media research and data analytics organisation.
The report added that the volume of oil spill ascribed to sabotage is 16,135 barrels of oil, and operational issues caused the spillage of about 2,599.
