The new Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has been criticised for appointing only southwest police officers as his aides.

A statement sent to journalists by police spokesman, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, indicated that the IGP settled for his kinsmen while announcing his first set of appointments.

The IGP has appointed CP Olatunji Disu as his Principal Staff Officer.

Other aides appointed are CSP Ganiyu Adebowale as Personal Assistant, SP Adewale Ajibuwa as Chief Protocol Officer, DSP Sheriff Lawal as Aide-de-Camp, and DSP Olawole Ogunwusi J. as Chief Security Officer.

The announcement caused some uproar, especially on social media, as some Nigerians expressed reservations about the appointments.

Timilehin George, a Labour Party supporter, wrote:

“All appointed aides from the same region of the country, yet he wants to earn public trust.”

Abdulkadir Ime wrote:

“Yoruba Lokan appointments!”

Hassan Baba wrote:

“And you expect Nigerians to trust you? Is it only Yoruba Southwest dey police? All the appointments are from the same tribe!”

Uchechukwu Onyejiaka wrote:

“So, all the appointments of the new IGP are people from this ethnic divide abi? Nigeria will work in our time.”

Nwabu Nwanne wrote:

“How come ALL appointed inner aides of the IGP are from his own part of the country? How are we getting lots of basic things wrong in Nigeria? This is shocking.”

Alfacino Domino wrote:

“All the IGP appointed aides are Yoruba… Not Nice.”

Chudy Okonkwo wrote:

“All his aides are his tribesmen. That speaks volumes and raises a red flag. It’s not a good sign.”

Dalhat Saidu, a public health official, wrote:

“Renewed hope. All personal staffs to the IG are from one tribe.”
