The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has forged a strategic partnership with the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) to enhance food security in the Niger Delta region.
The collaboration aims to leverage the region’s agricultural potential, particularly in rice cultivation, to foster economic development and youth empowerment.
During a meeting between the NDDC and a delegation from RIFAN, led by Mr Victor Korede, the Deputy National President of RIFAN, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of NDDC, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to promoting agriculture in the region.
Represented by Sir Victor Antai, the Executive Director of Projects at NDDC, Ogbuku highlighted the importance of the partnership in advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda and the Project HOPE initiative, which prioritize agriculture as a critical component.
Ogbuku underscored the potential of the Niger Delta region for rice cultivation, citing its arable wetlands, favourable rainfall patterns, and ecological advantages.
He expressed the NDDC’s determination to transition from an oil-based economy to agriculture, aiming to engage youths in mechanized farming and harness the region’s agricultural opportunities.
In response, Mr Emmanuel Anoh, the Vice President of South-South of RIFAN, reiterated the association’s commitment to demonstrating the viability of local food production in Nigeria.
Anoh emphasized the comparative advantage of the Niger Delta region in rice production and underscored the importance of collaboration with NDDC to achieve food security and youth empowerment goals.
As part of the partnership, the NDDC Executive Director of Projects led members of RIFAN to inspect the Elele Alimini Rice Mill in Rivers State, with plans to revitalize the facility and promote rice cultivation, processing, and packaging.
After the inspection, Anoh said: ”The initiative aims to revitalize rice production in the region and contribute to national food self-sufficiency.
”The partnership between NDDC and RIFAN signifies a significant step towards harnessing the agricultural potential of the Niger Delta region and addressing food security challenges.
”By leveraging collaboration and strategic initiatives, both organizations aim to create sustainable agricultural practices, empower youth, and contribute to economic growth in the region and beyond.”
