The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has announced plans to establish a public relations school that will eventually evolve into a full-fledged Public Relations University.
Dr Ike Neliaku, the President of NIPR, unveiled the plan during separate courtesy visits to the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) at their respective secretariats in Abuja.
Dr. Neliaku highlighted the importance of boosting professionalism in public relations and emphasized the need for specialized education in the discipline.
His words: ”The proposed public relations school aims to provide specialized training for graduates in mass communication, advertising, communication arts, and related fields, enabling them to specialize in public relations.
”Over time, this institution is envisioned to grow into a full-fledged Public Relations University, offering comprehensive education and training in the field.”
In addition to addressing the need for specialized education, Dr. Neliaku emphasized the legal aspect of public relations practice in Nigeria.
He reminded attendees that the law establishing NIPR criminalizes the practice of public relations without certification or licensing by the institute.
”Many journalists and editors transitioning to PR roles as spokespersons would benefit from obtaining NIPR certification to ensure compliance with Nigerian law,” he added.
Furthermore, Dr. Neliaku extended invitations to the NUJ and GOCOP leadership to participate in upcoming NIPR programs, including the National Spokespersons Summits and Awards, PRWeek, and the Rebirth Nigeria project.
”These initiatives aim to recognize excellence in public relations, promote ethical journalism, and contribute to the economic recovery of Nigeria through reputation management and communication strategies,” he ntoed.
In response, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, the National President of NUJ, lauded the strong relationship between NUJ and NIPR, emphasizing their shared commitment to promoting press freedom, ethical journalism, and effective communication.
Similarly, Maureen Chigbo, the President of GOCOP, commended NIPR for strengthening ties with online publishers and pledged support for the institute’s upcoming programs.
