Talented Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare has taken to social media to react after suffering racist abuse following their home loss to Club Brugge on Sunday.
Recall that during the feisty encounter, KRC Genk had the chance to take the lead in the 18th minute, but Arokodare unfortunately missed from the penalty spot.
After the game, which Gent later lost 3-0 to Club Brugge, angry fans took to social media to hurl racist insults at the Nigerian striker, who has scored 13 goals in 50 appearances for the club.
While reacting to the racist slurs directed at him in a post shared on his official Instagram page, Arokodare acknowledged his pride in his black identity and gave thanks to everyone, especially on social media, who helped him during this difficult period.
His club side, KRC Gent, also issued a statement condemning the abuse directed at their player while also condemning the online reactions.
“After the match against Club Brugge, Tolu received a series of racist reactions on social media,” the club stated.
“KRC Genk and everyone involved with the club condemn the reactions 100%.
“Racism has no place. Not in football stadiums, not on social media, nowhere. Unfortunately, racism is still deeply rooted in football and, by extension, in society as a whole.
“It is a shared responsibility to put a stop to this. As a club, we do everything we can to track down those responsible and report them to the police.“ The statement concluded.
