Ms. Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, has shared insights into the advancement of gender equality in the country.
Speaking at the UN Women Nigeria Media Forum 2024 held in Abuja, Eyong revealed that 22 per cent of decision-making positions in the private sector are now held by women, signifying progress in this area.
She emphasized sensitizing the citizenry on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
She highlighted that 35 states in Nigeria have adopted the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, showcasing a significant step forward.
”States such as Adamawa, Ebonyi, Lagos, Sokoto, and Cross Rivers have gone further by developing costed Action Plans for the implementation of the VAP Act, demonstrating a commitment to combatting violence against women,” she noted.
Additionally, Eyong shared success stories, mentioning the establishment of HeForShe Networks in 16 states across Nigeria.
Her words: ”These networks aim to garner support for gender equality and women’s empowerment initiatives.”
Addressing media practitioners, Eyong urged them to proactively educate the masses and drive behavioural change.
According to her, there is a need to challenge entrenched gender inequalities, amplify women’s voices, and advocate for the rights and aspirations of women and girls.
Eyong underscored the indispensable role of the media in setting the agenda on global issues and driving progress towards gender equality.
She further urged media practitioners to continue advancing women’s rights and creating a more inclusive society.
On his part, Mr. Lanrewaju Arogundade, Executive Director of the International Press Council (IPC), echoed Eyong’s sentiments, calling on journalists to promote women’s political participation.
He reiterated the importance of ensuring adequate representation of women in Nigeria’s elective and appointive positions.
