The Labour Party leadership has said that Peter Obi, its presidential candidate, would not be tempted to team up with Asiwaju Tinubu’s government of national unity. This is according to two interviews with the party’s National Publicity Secretary and Legal Adviser.
The statement comes six days after the former Anambra state governor attacked Tinubu on Arise TV’s ‘Morning Show’ following a controversy over his academic credentials. “Anybody who forge their credentials or age cannot lead the nation and is unfit to do so,” he said. “We are at a point where we are doubting the process and it needs to be brought to an end before anything else.”
“The process of coming to power is much more than just what happens after,” he added. “It’s important for people to go through the proper channels and not just jump in and say “Let’s move on”.
“Qualification is not about whether leaders make statements or do things that are truthful and honest.
When you think about what is happening in Nigeria at the moment, there are so many questions about certificates and age and so many other things that the leaders are falsifying or faking, it’s inconceivable that anyone could do that and be in the right, it means they are living a false life.
A few days after his blistering speech, his party warned Atiku, the PDP’s presidential candidate, not to bring the LP candidate into the midst of the President’s dispute with him. The party’s statement came after Atiku’s call for Peter, Rabiu and others to support him in exposing the President’s alleged transgressions.
Some observers said the LP’s response suggested that Obi, a former ally of Tinubu, would rather team up with him than with Atiku.
The party’s legal adviser, however, said it is impossible for a “fantasy” to come true and that Obi’s position has been made very clear. He added that it would be unwise for the party to say that it wants to work with the government at this point since the party is focused on getting its “taken back” mandate’ by the Supreme Court.
We are still in the process of recovering our stolen mandate through our appeal to the Supreme Court. There is no chance our candidate will serve in this administration. He is currently focused on our Supreme Court Appeal.
