To solve a major flaw in accelerator pedals that have the potential to break loose and become jammed, hence raising the danger of a crash, Tesla has recalled 3,878 Cybertruck electric pickup trucks.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wrote the recall document seen by Newsng on Friday.
Newsng learnt that all Cybertruck vehicles manufactured between November 13, 2023, and April 4, are affected by the fault, as per the documentation submitted to the NHTSA in the United States.
Two customer claims about the issue, which has gained much attention on TikTok and Tesla forums, have been reported to Tesla. Tesla briefly paused deliveries of the Cybertruck on Saturday.
The accelerator pedal on the Cybertruck may break loose and become stuck in the interior trim above the pedal, according to the automaker, if significant power is applied to the pedal.
According to Tesla, the problem arose from the “unapproved” use of soap to assist with attaching the pad to the accelerator pedal.
“An unapproved change introduced lubricant (soap) to aid in the component assembly of the pad onto the accelerator pedal. Residual lubricant reduced the retention of the pad to the pedal,” the NHTSA wrote in the recall document.
Newsng gathered that as per the timeline provided in the NHTSA petition, Tesla received two reports—one on April 3rd and the other on March 31st—notifying them of the malfunctioning accelerator pedals.
Before voluntarily announcing a recall, the corporation conducted internal examinations on April 12th to determine the cause.
According to Tesla, as of this past Monday, there have been no “collisions, injuries, or deaths” connected to the pedal issue.
