Seplat Energy Plc, a leading Nigerian independent energy company, has underscored the importance of executing corporate social investment (CSI) programs in oil and gas-producing communities and empowering their people to promote stability in the energy sector and ensure the security of critical national assets.
This assertion was made by Mr. Samson Ezugworie, Chief Operating Officer of Seplat Energy, during the Society of Petroleum Engineers Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (SPE OLEF) 2024 held in Abuja.
This year’s SPE OLEF theme was “Stability in the Energy Sector: Integrated Strategies for Infrastructure, Transportation, and Security.”
Ezugworie, speaking at the Energy Forum Discussion Session, emphasized the need for operators and the energy industry to prioritize sustainability and long-term thinking in addressing security challenges and ensuring stability.
He advocated for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to impact communities and people affected by energy operations significantly.
Highlighting Seplat Energy’s commitment to social investment, Ezugworie outlined various programs to enhance health, education, infrastructure, and skills development in communities where the company operates.
He stressed the importance of intentional interventions to foster partnerships and sustain positive relationships with host communities.
Ezugworie emphasized the correlation between empowerment and stability, noting that empowered and included individuals are less likely to resort to agitation or violence.
He commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the government for their efforts in securing oil and gas assets while acknowledging the importance of investment inflows and divestment programs in driving industry stability.
“The upcoming commissioning of Seplat Energy’s ANOH gas plant and the completion of the OB3 pipeline is a significant milestone that would position the company as a leading domestic gas supplier, contributing to Nigeria’s energy security,” he noted.
In addressing security challenges, Ezugworie advocated adopting advanced technologies such as sensors, drones, and robots for pipeline inspections.
He also stressed the need for improved response times and enhanced collaboration between government agencies and industry stakeholders to effectively combat threats such as oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
News.ng had earlier reported that while speaking at the forum, Mr Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, underscored the crucial role of bridging the energy access gap in driving Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
Kyari emphasized NNPC Ltd’s commitment to developing the necessary infrastructure to deliver oil and gas, fueling economic growth across the nation.
He noted that the NNPCL commitment is beyond mere compliance with statutory requirements to ensure all Nigerians’ energy security and prosperity.
