The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has approved 80 standards for using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
The move is part of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, promoting safer, more reliable, and environmentally sustainable energy solutions.
The approved standards cover various aspects of CNG utilization, including production, storage, transportation, and appliance compatibility.
SON’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs Funsho Bolaji, said the development and approval of the standards mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Her words: ”The standards are expected to contribute to safer CNG use, reduced environmental impact, and cost savings.
”The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing energy diversification and sustainability.”
On his part, Dr Ifeanyi Chukwunonso, the Director General and Chief Executive of SON, emphasized that adopting CNG could contribute to Nigeria’s energy security and global sustainability goals.
He urged stakeholders to collaborate in implementing the standards effectively and encouraged manufacturers and transportation stakeholders to embrace CNG as a viable and eco-friendly energy option.
The 80 approved standards cover various technical specifications and requirements, reflecting a collaborative effort involving industry experts, regulators, and stakeholders nationwide.
”Adherence to these standards is expected to protect consumers, workers, and the environment, offering a greener and more resilient future as Nigeria embraces CNG as an alternative fuel,” Chukwunonso added.
