The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has conducted raids in various markets across Lagos State, seizing fake and substandard tyres, solar batteries, and baby feeding bottles valued at billions of naira.
According to a statement by the organisation, the substandard products were evacuated from warehouses in different markets as part of SON’s ongoing efforts to eliminate unwholesome products from the Nigerian market.
Director-General of SON Ifeanyi Okeke highlighted that the seized tyres were damaged when stuffed into containers for shipment, compromising their quality.
Representing Okeke during the raids, the Director of Inspectorate and Compliance at SON, Pius Manji, explained that the evacuation was aimed at preventing the substandard tyres from entering the market.
He emphasised that stuffing tyres into containers deteriorated their quality, rendering them unfit for use upon arrival in the country.
Manji further stated that scientific tests revealed that the textile strength of the tyres had been compromised, necessitating their destruction to prevent potential harm to consumers.
The seized solar batteries were also identified as fake products from reputable brands, failing to meet SON’s benchmark standards.
Okeke stressed the importance of consumers receiving value for their money, especially with expensive products like solar batteries, amid the global shift towards renewable energy sources.
Moreover, Okeke raised concerns about counterfeit baby feeding bottles being produced by unscrupulous individuals for personal gain. He sternly warned manufacturers of fake products, indicating that SON would take decisive action against offenders to uphold product quality and safeguard consumer interests.
Meanwhile, SON has approved 80 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) standards.
The move is part of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, promoting safer, more reliable, and environmentally sustainable energy solutions.
The approved standards cover various aspects of CNG utilisation, including production, storage, transportation, and appliance compatibility.
