Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, has commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for buying electric buses to boost Lagos state’s mass transportation system.
Governor Sanwo-Olu had announced the arrival of the first set of electric buses for the state’s mass transit scheme.
“I am excited to announce the first set of electric buses in the Lagos Mass Transit Master Plan as part of our increased effort to modernise every sector of Lagos,” he wrote on Twitter.
Murray-Bruce says the move is commendable, noting that other states should follow the model of Lagos and its governor.
He also stated that the buses will ensure a cleaner and more sustainable Nigeria in the medium to long term if well maintained.
“Congratulations to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on leading the charge towards a greener future with Lagos’ first set of electric buses.
“This innovative move is a game-changer for public transit, setting a model for other states to follow. We look forward to a cleaner, more sustainable Nigeria in the medium to long term,” he wrote.
The roll-out of the electric buses started with a three-month proof-of-concept phase to establish the vehicles’ viability.
The governor had promised to increase the fleet of electric vehicles in the state as part of his government’s effort to transform Lagos into a smart city.
Lagos is the biggest city in Africa, but its transport infrastructure leaves much to be desired, prompting Governor Sanwo-Olu to promise that he will address the issue.
The new Lagos rail transportation system, especially the 13-kilometre rail line from Mile 2 to the Marina, is one of the infrastructural development the Sanwo-Olu administration is pursuing vigorously.
