The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has unveiled plans to distribute the new single and General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) to applicants through their respective banks, a process akin to issuing Debit and Credit cards.
In a statement released by Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, the commission announced that the new National Identity card will be issued as a General Multipurpose Card (GMPC), streamlining multiple card requirements into a convenient solution.
Part of the statement read: ”NIMC is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) to integrate payment and financial functionalities into the card.
”The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme developed by NIBSS.
”Applicants seeking the new card must request it with their National Identification Number (NIN) through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks.
”The issuance process will adhere to existing Debit/Credit card issuance protocols, with applicants able to pick up the card at designated centres or opt for delivery at an additional cost.”
The commission said introducing the new identity card, equipped with payment features and supported by NIBSS’ AfriGO, marks a significant step towards enhancing registered Nigerians’ access to social and financial services.
It further stated that it aligns with its objectives, aimed at providing verifiable identity features to citizens.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently hosted the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote and her team at the NCC’s headquarters.
During the meeting, discussions revolved around crucial areas of collaboration, with a primary focus on harmonising data.
The NCC team assured their NIMC counterparts of unwavering commitment and unreserved support in furthering the common objectives of both Commissions.
