President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele, in the late hours of Friday, June 9.
The Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly arrested the apex bank boss hours later.
The DSS attempted to arrest Emefiele earlier in the year, but some soldiers reportedly protected him.
The secret police had accused the Delta-born bank chief of economic sabotage and financial terrorism.
Nigerians have been reacting to the arrest of the former Zenith Bank Managing Director, who is popularly referred to as ‘Meffy’.
Valerian Nwadike, a lawyer, looks at the legal angle. He wrote:
“The suspension of the CBN Governor is a welcomed development. Until the decision of the Federal High Court is appealed to the Supreme Court, Senator Tinubu GCFR is acting within the ambit of the law.”
Jeremy Emy has no iota of pity for the suspended CBN boss, He wrote:
“Emefiele’s suspension and arrest is as expected. His audacity was out of this world. He was completely tone-deaf to the plight of Nigerians these past eight years. He issued crazy and reckless laws that affected all green passport holders at home and abroad. Meffy, you must crumble.”
Oluseun Akin wrote:
“Meffy was so terrible that everyone is happy and united he was suspended despite the legality or otherwise of the suspension. The last time everyone was on the same page like this was probably Abacha’s death.”
Obàfémi Babagana, a trader, wrote:
“Almost everyone in jubilation over the sack of Meffy shows you how terrible he performed for all those years as the CBN governor. Not a single positive thing in my book.”
Alli-Balogun H.Lekan wrote:
“Meffy had the option of resigning and refused to take it. It’s obvious, given what happened before the election and especially with the Naira confiscation policy.”
Joe Abah, a governance expert, wrote:
“Chai! Meffy was a very bad boy sha.”
